Ayurveda

Ayurveda brings profound healing to those who instinctively know that health and happiness arise from balance. With a simple and elegant approach Ayurveda helps each individual discover their own particular blueprint for living well.

According to Ayurveda, one size definitely does not fit all, we need to respect and understand what works for us in terms of what we eat, drink, how we think and how we live our lives.

For example, some people are so laid back, they can cope with endless amounts of stress, it just does not affect them. Others find stress totally incapacitating and may experience high levels of anxiety, insomnia, headaches etc. One is not better than the other, they are just different; we need to accept this difference in others, but especially within ourselves.

Becoming balanced

The first step for most of us is to regain the balance that we lost long ago. We can start by finding out what our natural constitution was when we were born and comparing it to what it actually is right now.

Once we have worked out where we are at, we can apply the Ayurvedic approach of elemental doshas Vata, Pitta and Kapha to design the most appropriate program to help us regain and maintain our balance. Diet, lifestyle choices and exercise are key to regaining balance.

Herbal treatments are also often a great help in Ayurvedic detoxification and rejeuventation.

How do we lose balance?

In Ayurveda everything we do, say and think has an affect on our well -being. That effect either brings us closer to balance or further away from it.

For example, regular intake of hot, spicey food will cause an imbalance in someone who has a high level of Pitta in their natural constitution.

Over time, this may lead to certain skin disorders such as eczema or gastric conditions such as peptic ulcers. Similarly people with a predominantly Kapha constitution may drink 2 litres of water a day because they have heard it is healthy to do so. Due to their natural constitution however this level of water intake may lead to water retention, oedema and weight increase.

Illness or dis-ease

When we live in a state of imbalance over a prolonged period of time we are no longer at ease with ourselves. The inevitable consequence is ill-health which gradually accumulates at a cellular level.

Our body tries to give us early warning signals; we may experience headaches, fatigue, weight gain, depression, aches and pains, alllergies, feelings of anxiety, anger etc; things we consider to be just a 'normal' part of life. Untreated however, apparently innocent symptoms can develop into serious conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, heart failure, chronic fatigue syndrome, cancer, lung disease etc.

Listening to our body and learning to interprete what it is saying is therefore at the heart of Ayurveda. Once we understand ourselves better, we are able to make healthier choices.
